The Art Festival of the 15th China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair (ICIF) will unfold from May 10 to June 29 in major theatres in Shenzhen, Guangdong province.
Themed "gathering world classics, promoting Chinese culture", the festival was co-organized by the publicity department of the Communist Party of China Shenzhen Committee and Shenzhen culture, radio, television, tourism and sports bureau.
The opening ceremony of the art festival featuring the musical drama, Zhaojun, will be staged at the Shenzhen Grand Theater on the evenings of May 10 and May 11.
The drama, Zhaojun, co-produced by China National Opera & Dance Drama Theatre and Hohhot National Performing Arts Group, tells a story set in the Han Dynasty (202BC-220) of an imperial court maid, Zhaojun. After volunteering to marry a tribe leader of the nomadic people from the north, Zhaojun ultimately brought peace and stability to the northern border as well as promoted cultural exchanges between both peoples.
"There are too many dance dramas centered around male characters. We now have a chance to go into the heart of Zhaojun and tell stories from the perspective of a female," said Kong Dexin, director of the musical drama. "That's a fabulous experience."
"Folk dance is more than folk or ancient dances. It contains in it the Chinese peoples' spiritual essence," said Tang Shiyi, a leading performer in the drama. "The dance drama combines two genres of performing arts. They integrate and also conflict with each other."
There will be 28 shows comprising different kinds of dramas, dances, plays, operas and music at the art festival, which will be performed by more than 1,100 artists belonging to 16 troupes from China and abroad. In addition, there will also be 16 other cultural and artistic activities. Together they make the 50-day festival a valuable platform for Shenzhen citizens to appreciate contemporary performing arts.
